Cummins Inc. revealed at MINExpo 2012 the next-generation QSK50 engine ready to meet EPA Tier 4 Final ultra-low emissions standards with up to 2,000 hp (1,491 kW) output for powering large mining haul trucks, excavators and loaders.
· 16-cylinder, 50-liter engine
· Utilizes fully integrated Cummins Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) aftertreatment system, designed as a drop-in replacement for exhaust silencers
· SCR system combined with clean-combustion enhancements enables 5% or more reduction in operating costs due to higher fuel efficiency and low consumption of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)
· Durability improvements, and lower fuel burn, contribute to an extended life-to-overhaul
· Operators can expect an additional 1,500 hours or more before rebuild
· Oil and filter services are extended to 500-hour intervals for Tier 4 Final
· Meets very low levels of 0.04 g/kW-hr Particulate Matter (PM) and 3.5 g/kW-hr for oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions required by Tier 4 Final
· Main focus of emissions reduction takes place in exhaust stream, eliminating any potential compromises to power output or reliability
· SCR aftertreatment removes NOx, leaving in-cylinder combustion able to more easily focus only on PM reduction
· In-cylinder temperatures and pressure remain very similar to those of the Tier 2 engine
· Emissions reduction approache eliminates need for additional on-engine systems, extra cooling or turbocharging complexity
· Retains engine envelope nearly identical to that of Tier 2 predecessor
· SCR system has same space claim as that of typical Tier 2 exhaust silencers, providing equivalent acoustic reduction
· Seals on critical joints and maintenance-free crankcase breather system eliminate oil drips and mist
· Fuel filters feature NanoNet filtration media for enhanced fuel cleanliness and high levels of protection for the high-pressure Modular Common Rail Fuel System (MCRS)
· MCRS reaches peak torque of 5,805 lbs.-ft. (7,871 Nm)
· Fueling is finely balanced across cylinders, providing low levels of vibration and ensuring that visible smoke from engine exhaust is virtually eliminated
· Reduces carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions compared with older engines, which can be further enhanced by running engine on B20 biodiesel blend
